Federal Environment Agency, Dessau

Awarded with the DGNB certificate in Gold

The most distinctive feature of the new Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt) building in Dessau, which opened in 2005, is its kilometre-long glass and wood facade, which encompasses the building in a broad range of colours. This building, with its 39,000 square metres of floor space, houses areas open to the public, such as a library, auditorium and seminar rooms, as well as the necessary offices. Its meandering floor plan surrounds a glass-roofed inner courtyard in the western part of the building, while its eastern section opens up to a large green area extending from the city edge right into the inner city. It sets benchmarks in the area of construction methods designed to save resources, using completely new kinds of solutions to reduce energy consumption. At the same time, it is an architectural and urban development masterpiece. JUNG’s LS 990 range of switches fits in perfectly here.
